Computer Engineering Facts for CSE Students
Computer
Engineering is one of the most promising disciplines in Engineering
as computers are the sole platform for the development of different
technologies.
It is because of this that the engineering discipline is
constantly evolving.
Here
are some interesting facts about Computer Engineering.
- First computer
The
first computer and its origin would be challenging to trace as
computers evolved with time. However, according to Wikipedia, the
Oxford English Dictionary lists the use of the word ‘computer’ in
a 1613 book known as “The Yong Mans Gleanings.”
The
use of devices to aid computation dates back to pre-20th
century. The Abacus was one of the most prominent computational
devices which were used in around 2400 BC. The Antikythera mechanism
is believed to be the first mechanical computer.
Digital
computers, during their early stage, were electromechanical;
mechanical relays were driven by electric switches to perform
calculations. With the advent of vacuum tubes and digital electronic
circuits, digital calculation replaced analogue. The invention of
transistors played a key role in the development of microprocessors
which, in turn, paved way for modern computers.
- Personal computer revolution of the 70s and 80s
During
the mid-70s, American entrepreneur Steve Jobs and electronics
engineer Steve Wozniak formed Apple Inc and revolutionised the
perception of the personal computer. While Jobs had the vision,
Wozniak was the technical wizard as he single-handedly developed the
Apple I computer in 1976 which was the debut of Apple.
Apple
Inc and Microsoft have played a key role in facilitating the access
of personal computers to people worldwide.
- Women in computing
Women
have made a significant contribution to the evolution of the
computing industry as some of the first programmers during the early
20th
century were women. Ada Lovelace is one of the most prominent
pioneers in the computing world as she was the first person to
develop an algorithm for Analytical Engine - the first modern
computer.
American
computer scientist and United States Navy rear admiral, Grace Hopper
was the first to create a compiler for a programming language. She
also helped program the Mark I computer.
- Computer Science Engineering course in India
Engineering
colleges in India such as IST (Institute of Science & Technology)
offer three types of courses for Computer Engineering including
Diploma in Computer Engineering, B. Tech, and M. Tech.
Students
are eligible to pursue diploma course after completing their 10th
with a science background. B. Tech is a 4 years course for regular
students (who have completed their high school) and a 3 years course
for diploma holders as they get a lateral entry in 2nd
year.
Computer
Engineering colleges in West Bengal
West
Bengal is a hub for engineering colleges and IST (Institute ofScience & Technology) is one of the most reputed ones.
It’s
because of engineering colleges like IST that highly qualified
engineers graduate every year.
