3D printers (mechanical engineering)
A
3D printer, as it name implies, prints three-dimensional objects
while being guided by a computer. 3D printers have come in trend as
companies have been implementing it to print/produce
complex/intricate parts of their overall product to reduce production
cost.
As
3D printers use electronic data source to print 3-D models, objects
of almost any shape or geometry can be printed. Just like
conventional 2D printers, 3-D printers use ink jets to shape the
object (intended to be printed) layer by layer.
Smart grid (electrical engineering)
A
smart grid is an electrical
grid which comprises of a variety of operational measures
including Energy efficient resources, renewable energy resources,
Smart appliances, and smart meters.
The
most important aspects of a smart grid include distribution of
electricity, and electronic power conditioning and control of the
production.
India
is one of those countries which is steadily venturing into renewable
energy sources such as solar and wind energy. As these renewable
energy resources are unpredictable energy sources, it is important to

Origami-inspired robots (electronic engineering)
The
realm of small-scale robots is taking a whole new turn as
folding/origami-inspired robots are being developed. Conventional
small-scale robots require bulky batteries for power which limit
their functionality. But this is not the case with origami-inspired
robots as they do not require any battery.
Instead,
they are controlled by a wireless magnetic field. These robots are
being developed to make them commercially viable. Their success can
make a great impact in medical science and other industries that
involve precision.
Burj Khalifa (civil engineering)
Burj
Khalifa is a modern architectural marvel as it is the tallest
building in the world as it stands at a height of 2,717 ft. Burj
Khalifa is an engineering feat and doesn't seem to have a peer when
it comes to concept and execution.
The
construction work of Burj Khalifa began in 2004, took five years to
complete, and was opened in 2010. The main objective behind the Dubai
government's execution to construct the building was to diversify
from an oil based economy.
Palm Islands (civil engineering)
Palm
islands are three man-made islands (including Palm Jumeirah, Palm
Jebel Ali, and Deira Island) on the coast of Dubai. Amongst these
three artificial islands, Palm Jumeirah has been completed.
The
shape of the island resembles a palm tree, with a crescent on the
top. Palm Jebel Ali has also been designed to take a similar shape.
The Palm Jumeirah hosts residencies, hotels, and resorts.
